NEW DELHI: Three workers died while three remained trapped under debris after an under-construction building collapsed in Bengaluru amid incessant rains, news agency PTI reported citing police sources. Fourteen were rescued from the building collapse site during the rescue operation.

Police said said that twenty people were present during the incident which took place in the Horamavu Agara area during the afternoon hours. Fourteen people were rescued from the building collapse site.

The heavy downpour have caused widespread flooding in various residential areas, transforming roads into virtual rivers. Authorities in wake of serious conditions have announced a school holiday on Wednesday.

Five teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force have been deployed to evacuate people from the flooded areas, including Yelahanka, one of the worst-affected districts. They are using coracles to assist in the evacuation process.

According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Yelahanka received an astonishing 157 mm (six inches) of rain in just six hours from Tuesday midnight to Tuesday 6 am, causing Kendriya Vihar in Yelahanka to resemble a river with waist-deep water.

In addition to the flooding, there have been reports of pothole-related incidents, which have triggered a public outcry. Opposition parties have also criticized the ruling Congress for the current situation. J

"Ah, just another day in Bengaluru where Congress government's blunders have turned Bengaluru's world-class infrastructure seamlessly into a mini Venice due to the rains! Kudos to @siddaramaiah & @DKShivakumar for their visionary leadership – Bengaluru is really floating into the future. Maybe next term, we can invest in boats instead of roads?," Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) posted on X.

Many houses in low-lying areas and near lakes have been inundated, causing damage to household items, vehicles, and electronic goods. Locals were even seen catching fish in some waterlogged areas.

The heavy rains have also led to severe traffic jams on many important roads, including Ballari Road, which leads to the Kempegowda International Airport, as well as Tumakuru Road, Old Madras Road, and Kanakapura Road.

The India Meteorology Department has predicted that light to moderate showers accompanied by lightning are likely to occur at isolated places over Chikkaballapur, Chikmagalur, Kolar, and Bengaluru Urban.
