NEW DELHI: In a session organized by the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, described the recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very important.” The two leaders, meeting formally for the first time in five years on October 23 during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, reached what Xu called “important common understandings” that could steer India-China relations back on a path of “steady development.”
Calling it a pivotal encounter, Xu highlighted that the talks established guidelines for future relations, setting both nations on a trajectory toward “improving and developing” their bilateral ties . Addressing the session attendees, Xu emphasized the shared commitment of the two nations to “move forward smoothly,” despite lingering tensions, particularly in regions like Eastern Ladakh.
Reflecting on the recent progress in the border disengagement, Xu expressed hope that such “specific disagreements” would no longer disrupt the broader relationship, saying, “The most important thing is how to handle the differences.”
On a lighter note, Xu welcomed the resumption of direct flights between India and China, which he sees as a practical step toward fostering smoother cooperation. “As an ambassador, I am looking forward to this as it saves time,” he remarked, underscoring his optimism for robust collaborations in not just political spheres but also in business and cultural exchange.
The Modi-Xi meeting , he suggested, is a fresh start for both sides, with each ready to redefine their shared journey.
