NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday expressed confidence that the ruling Mahayuti coalition will secure a "thumping" majority in the upcoming assembly elections. Shinde cited the recent success of the BJP in Haryana as an encouraging sign.

Shinde made these remarks to reporters at the Pune airport after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh.

He also participated in the NDA chief ministers' council meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the meeting, NDA chief ministers discussed development and welfare schemes. "There was a general consensus that such meetings should be held twice a year," Shinde said.

Referring to the Haryana poll results, Shinde said, "The Haryana election results defied all survey predictions as people acknowledged the work of Prime Minister Narendra Modi." The BJP had won 48 out of 90 seats in the Haryana assembly.

Shinde also mentioned that Haryana voters supported the 'double engine' government, indicating support for the central party.

"People in Haryana voted for the 'double engine' government, choosing to support the party in power at the centre. Harayana results will be replicated in Maharashtra as we have implemented various welfare schemes, including the ' Ladki Bahin Yojana '," Maharashtra CM said.

Maharashtra, with 288 assembly seats, will have elections on November 20, and vote counting will take place on November 23.

Shinde, leading the Shiv Sena , is part of the Mahayuti coalition, which also includes the BJP and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

"Comprehensive development efforts are being implemented in the state. I'm confident that Mahayuti will retain power with a thumping majority in the upcoming elections," Shinde added.

The Mahayuti government is promoting the Ladki Bahin Yojana, providing a monthly stipend of Rs 1,500 to poor women, aiming to attract voters following a poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls.

The coalition faces the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) opposition, comprising the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP).
