Another 50 bomb threats take number of flights hit to 170+ in little over a week

NEW DELHI: Close to 50 flights across domestic airlines received threats on Tuesday alone, with the menace only getting worse by the day. IndiGo received at least 23 threats within 24 hours (through Monday and Tuesday), with three of its international flights getting diverted. Vistara said "some" of its flights got threats too. Akasa was also impacted.

Officials across airlines say the trend of threats is changing with different handles targeting different airlines in the past 2-3 days.

Earlier the same handle would issue the same number of threats to multiple airlines but now different handles send threats to different airlines. Govt says it is working to severely punish those sending such threats.

IndiGo said it had received threats to 13 of its flights on Tuesday alone. At least three of them were diverted - Bengaluru-Jeddah (6E 77) to Doha, Kozhikode-Jeddah (6E 65) to Riyadh, and Delhi-Jeddah (6E 63) to Medina.

"The aircraft were isolated and all passengers were safely disembarked. Ensuring the safety and security of our customers and crew remains paramount in all facets of our operations. We are working closely with the relevant authorities, and mandated checks are currently underway. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused our customers and appreciate their understanding," IndiGo statements for these flights said.

On Tuesday alone 13 flights each of IndiGo and Air India received bomb threats . Akasa Air got threats for over 12 flights and Vistara received threats for 11, sources said.

"A few Vistara flights operating on October 22, 2024 received security threats on social media . We immediately alerted the relevant authorities and are following all security procedures as directed by them. At Vistara, the safety and security of our customers, crew, and aircraft are of utmost importance," said a Vistara spokesperson.

Air India's Delhi-New York flight and Akasa's Bengaluru-Varanasi flight were among those that received the threats at the time of filing this report.

Air India said it got 10 threats on Monday-Tuesday night. "We confirm that some Air India flights operating on October 21, 2024 were subject to hoax security threats received on social media. Following laid-down protocols, relevant authorities were immediately alerted, and all security procedures strictly adhered to, as per guidance from the regulatory authorities and security agencies. All the flights have landed safely. The safety and security of our passengers, crew, and aircraft remain our top priority," said AI.

In nine days, more than 170 flights operated by Indian carriers have received bomb threats, PTI reported. , mostly through social media.
