Patrick Marleau, Keith Tkachuk, or Peter Bondra? The Hall of Fame debate intensifies for NHL's 500-goal club

Send Push
Patrick Marleau, Keith Tkachuk, Peter Bondra, and Pat Verbeek all joined the select club of 500 NHL goals, a feat only 48 players in history can claim. But even among the rarefied ranks of the four hockey icons, none are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame, centering an ongoing debate among fans and analysts regarding whether any or all of them truly belong in the honor.
Patrick Marleau leads the conversation, but is longevity enough for a Hall of Fame consideration?
Of the four 500-goal players who are not yet in the Hockey Hall of Fame, Patrick Marleau has the most solid fan and media support. The veteran San Jose Sharks left wing has 566 career goals. He also had 1,197 points in total, including 72 goals and 55 assists in the playoffs. His NHL career spanned 23 seasons, with 21 of those with the San Jose Sharks.

"Marleau is like 30th all-time in goals and 250th in GPG," a Reddit user pointed out.
"Canes legend Patrick Marleau gets my vote," another said.

Keith Tkachuk, on the other hand, was a power forward with attitude who brought consistent offense to all of the teams that he played for and contributed greatly internationally for the United States.
"My vote would go to Tkachuk. Scored at least 40 goals 4 times. Averaged a point per game 7 times. Just missed on 4 other occasions. Bondra didn’t do near enough. Marleau was a compiler. Verbeek also scored at least 40 goals 4 times. Averaged a point per game 5 times. All would go into hall of very good though," a Reddit argued said.

Peter Bondra, whose scorching speed and rapid release made him a force to be reckoned with, led the NHL twice in goals as a member of the Washington Capitals. Bondra's contribution prior to the Rocket Richard Trophy era is undervalued by many.
"Bondra is probably the most deserving of these 4 but I doubt I'd vote him in even in a weak year," a fan on Reddit said.
Pat Verbeek is the weakest of the bunch. While his 522 goals are impressive, Verbeek's case is devoid of statistical dominance and championship success typically offered by Hall of Fame enshrinees. His legend was based on toughness and consistency, not stardom.
"Verbeek - No (2ASGs not much else bar playing a lot of games like Marleau)," a Reddit commenter shared to which one replied, "I agree. They're all Hall of Very Good. And I'm old, I watched them all play in their primes. Marleau is #3 out of those guys for me.. He had an exceptional career riding shotgun with Joe. Verbeek is an obvious no."
Who gets the final vote?
The case ultimately comes down to one's definition of Hall of Fame worthiness. Is it peak performance, longevity, or consistency? Marleau's advocates argue for his leadership, while Tkachuk's advocates point to his balanced offense and toughness. Bondra supporters point to his scoring titles and speed, with Verbeek widely regarded by many as the best example of "Hall of Very Good."

In a league where statistics tell only half the story, the Hall of Fame discussion between Patrick Marleau, Keith Tkachuk, Peter Bondra, and Pat Verbeek remains as contentious as ever. All four had fantastically good careers, but whether any of them gets the sport's highest honor may rest with how the voters weigh stats vs. legacy. With even more members joining the 500-goal club in the coming years, the Hall's bar may shift once more, keeping this dispute very much in the news.
