Jets acquire Adams, leaving Williams' future in question

The Jets are actively reshaping their roster after acquiring six-time Pro Bowler Davante Adams this week. With his strong connection to four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, it’s likely Adams will start immediately.

Unfortunately, WR Mike Williams appears to be the odd man out, with trade interest from the Chargers, Steelers, and Saints. This decision isn’t surprising, given Williams’ struggles in New York, where he managed just 10 catches for 145 yards over six games.

Adding to the speculation, he missed Wednesday’s practice due to personal issues, hinting at dissatisfaction during his time with the Jets. Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich offered no explanation for his absence, fueling trade rumors . As ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted on Get Up, “Something’s going on in New York,” pointing to a potential trade brewing. (via: EssentiallySports)

Similar to Aaron Rodgers, Williams is working his way back from a season-ending ACL injury sustained against the Vikings, sidelining him for 14 games and ending his seven-year stint with the Chargers. Now with the Jets, he’s struggling to find his rhythm, especially with Rodgers throwing from center.

In six games together, the 30-year-old has received just 14 targets, averaging only 14.5 yards per catch. His performance has been disappointing, and an interception against the Bills on Monday Night Football only added to the frustration, prompting Rodgers to voice his criticism after the Jets' third straight loss.

Aaron Rodgers addresses his criticism of Mike Williams

Rodgers was visibly fuming after the Bills game, calling it a "golden opportunity missed." He stated, “We need to get going. This was a golden opportunity. Some games you win in the NFL, and some games you give away. This was a giveaway.” He didn’t hold back in critiquing teammate Williams for his decision-making in the end zone.

Reflecting on his final pass, which could have reached the red zone, Rodgers explained, “It’s two vertical routes. Allen Lazard is down the seam, and Mike’s down the red line. I’m looking at Allen. He puts his hand up, and three guys go with him. So, I’m throwing a no-look to the red line. And when I peek my eyes back there, Williams is running an in-breaker. He’s got to be on the red line.”

Despite addressing his criticism of Williams, A-Rod doubled down, saying, “I think if you watch my press conferences, I’ve started with myself when I’ve made mistakes. That’s the standard for everybody. There were a lot of mistakes throughout the night, but if you’re looking at just that play, that’s what the question was, what happened on that play.”

With Davante Adams now in the receiver room, it seems unlikely Rodgers will need to criticize Williams again. However, one question remains: does Williams deserve better after just six games? We may find out soon if he gets traded in the coming weeks.
