Jayson Tatum gave Boston Celtics fans everything they could hope for on Monday night— until it all came crashing down in the final minutes.

It was shaping up to be one of Tatum’s most explosive playoff performances as the All-Star forward tallied 42 points in Game 4 against the New York Knicks. But with just over three minutes left on the clock, disaster struck. Tatum collapsed to the floor after a scramble for a loose ball, clutching his right leg in visible agony as the Celtics trailed 111-104.

The Boston Celtics were hit with an unfortunate Jayson Tatum injury

The Celtics were forced to use their final timeout as team trainers rushed to Tatum’s side. According to ESPN, the injury occurred while Tatum was battling for a loose ball, which led to him collapsing in visible agony. Jayson Tatum remained down for several moments, eventually needing to be helped off the floor, unable to put any weight on his right foot.

He didn’t return to the court. In fact, ESPN cameras later showed Tatum being taken to the locker room in a wheelchair. In the final minutes of the game, Tatum went down, grabbing his right ankle in obvious pain and promptly signaled for a timeout. The exact nature of the injury is still unknown, but the visual alone suggests it could be serious.

This injury came during one of Tatum’s most complete performances of the postseason. In 39 minutes, he went 16-for-28 from the field (57.1%), including 7-of-16 from three-point range (43.8%). He was also perfect at the free-throw line, converting all three attempts. Beyond his scoring, Tatum added eight defensive rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks.

Yet, even with his individual brilliance, the Celtics couldn't find their rhythm as a team. Boston fell short, 121-113, at Madison Square Garden, handing New York a 3-1 series lead.

Offensively, he was nearly unstoppable, but the Celtics struggled to defend the Knicks' relentless pace. On top of that, Tatum’s four personal fouls and three turnovers were costly in a game where every possession mattered. While he gave his all, his injury may now overshadow what could’ve been a series-shifting performance.
