Karwa Chauth 2024 Fasting Rules: What to do and avoid while fasting

Karwa Chauth is one of the major festivals of Hindus, which is celebrated by married women. This is a traditional festival, when married women observe strict fast from dawn to dusk for the well being of their husbands. Karwa Chauth festival is celebrated on Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. This year, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 20, 2024.

There are so many rules and guidelines for the women, which they need to follow on that particular day and celebrate this festival with immense devotion.

Fasting Tips for Karwa Chauth Vrat:

Karwa Chauth 2024 : Do's

1. Wake up Early


Women are advised to wake up early in the morning and that also before sunrise and take bath and cleanse yourself before eating Sargi.

2. Sargi

Eating Sargi is one of the main ritual of this festival but there are some women, who do not even eat Sargi before starting the fast so this is not compulsory ritual for everyone. This should be followed according to your family traditions. Sargi is usually given to daughter in law from mother in law that includes food that are rich in protein and vitamins which can help you to maintain your energy levels and the food should be sattvik also.

3. Wear auspicious colour

Women are advised to wear auspicious colours that includes green, red, orange, pink, yellow, peach and maroon. As we all know that women observe fast for the longevity of their husbands then they should keep this thing in their min that they should choose vibrant and auspicious colour clothes to wear on this day.

4. Applying Mehendi


Applying mehendi or henna on this auspicious day is very important ritual as this is the symbol of good fortune and also being married. Women apply not on their hands but on feet also. You must follow this ritual and apply mehendi on this particular day. It is believed that darker the mehendi, the deeper the love between husband and wife.

5. Reciting Katha

Karwa Chauth Vrat is dedicated to Chauth Mata so women are advised to follow all the puja rituals, gather all the women and recite Karwa Chauth vrat katha, which is also an essential part of the puja.

6. Prepare Sattvik Food

Women prepare sattvik food on this sacred day which is first offered Lord Ganesha and then Chauth Mata. Halwa, Poori, Aaloo Ki sabzi, Kheer and other food items are also prepared by the women.

7. Offer Gift to your mother in law

On this auspicious occasion of Karwa Chauth, it is important to give something to your mother in law and seek blessings by touching her feet. In some regions, this is a tradition to seek blessings of the mother in law and give them food, clothes, sweets and money as a token of love and respect.

8. Wear Solaah Shringar

If a women is married then she is always recognised by her looks and by the shringar items she wears such as vermillion, bindi, bangles, anklets, an so on. So, they must wear these shringar items on this propitious day.

9. Wait till Moonrise

Women who will observe fast on this sacred day, must keep patience till the moonrise and break your fast after worshipping Moon God.

Karwa Chauth 2024: Don'ts

1. Avoid wearing inauspicious colours

Women are advised not to wear inauspicious colours for this particular festival such as blue, black, grey, cream and white. These are not considered auspicious colours for a married women, who wants to seek blessings of the Goddess for the longevity of their husbands.

2. Avoid Tamasik Food

Women, who are fasting or not fasting make sure that you do not anything or perform an activity which is considered as tamasik. This breaks the auspiciousness of the day and women should maintain the sacredness of this event.

3. Don't speak harsh

As you will be on fasting and this is not a casual fast, you will be fasting for the well being for your husband and worshipping Chauth Mata on the day of Karwa Chauth so you should not speak ill about anyone and do not even speak harshly with anyone. This might affect you and other person also.

4. Maintain Celibacy

Karwa Chauth is the sacred day to perform puja and seek blessings of Chauth Mata so you have to be clean mentally, and physically. Avoid intimacy with your partner and your thoughts should be clean.

5. Do not eat

Once you take the sankalp of observing fast without food and water then you have to maintain this whole day and abstain from eating food and drinking water and you follow this while fasting. This can be challenging but remain positive and focused.

6. Avoid physical activity


You are advised to avoid heavy work and physical activity on this day as you will be fasting so better do not do exercise and running.
