We all wonder about the secret to a long, healthy life. Is it good food, regular exercise, staying happy, or maybe just good luck? While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, some people seem to figure it out, and that too, not just living long, but living well.

One such story is about a 100-year-old woman from New York, who recently completed a century, and surprisingly, she is capable of doing what most people of her age or younger cannot!

Geraldine “Jerry” Leo didn’t just turn 100, instead, she celebrated her centennial birthday by doing something many people half her age can’t, by holding a five-minute plank. At the Great South Bay YMCA in Bay Shore, Long Island, Jerry has become no less than a legend, who is known for her strength, balance, and unshakeable energy.

Planking is a core workout that requires one to hold their body straight using only the toes and forearms, which is quite tough at any age. While her fellow fitness classmates struggle to maintain the pose for two minutes, she calmly pushes on for another three without breaking a sweat.

“It works your core absolutely beautiful,” Jerry told ABC7, sharing her love for the exercise. Her plank strength, unaided hearing, and sharp hand-eye coordination continue to amaze everyone around her.

Her instructor, Elizabeth Grant, called Jerry’s form “really unbelievable,” saying, “Jerry is an inspiration to everyone who meets her. Her form is beautiful and she can teach people how to do it the right way.”

The YMCA staff and her fellow gym-goers couldn’t agree more. Despina Tenedorio, director of health and wellness at the YMCA, called Jerry “a powerful woman.” Meanwhile, her friend Marion Saturno added, “She definitely puts some of the class to shame, including me. She’s my hero”.

Jerry says the YMCA has been a major part of her journey. She first joined back in 1991, encouraged by her late husband, Dominick, when the facility first opened. “The Y keeps me alive and going in all aspects of my life,” she told ABC7.

Apart from her Friday plank sessions, Jerry also participates in weekly weightlifting classes, and to honour her 100th birthday, both the YMCA and the Mayor of Babylon celebrated her milestone, recognizing her as a true inspiration.

What is the secret of her long life?

When asked about her secret to a long, healthy life, Jerry kept it simple:
“Be consistent, be positive, and keep moving in whatever you do. That’s very important,” she said.
