In an astonishing incident, a man from Bhagalpur in Bihar came to the hospital with a venomous snake wrapped around his neck after the snake bit him. According to several online media reports the incident happened on October 15 when 48-year-old daily wage earner Prakash Mandal was sleeping at his home where he was allegedly bitten by the snake- - a Russell's Viper .
A bold and unusual decison
Despite the pain and the worry of what poison may be triggering through his body, Mandal decided to bring the snake to the hospital. He wanted the doctors to understand exactly which species of snake this was and be able to treat him appropriately. So, carrying this venomous reptile in one hand and holding it by the mouth and the other end letting it wrap around his neck, Mandal headed towards the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital.
When Mandal arrived, the view of him with the snake shocked and scared both hospital staff and patients. Some people standing nearby were fearful and kept their distance, while others couldn’t help but record the highly unusual scene on their phones. A man even moved forward to help lead Mandal safely through the hospital.
The danger and impact of a Russell’s Viper bite
The Russell's Viper is considered to be one of the most dangerous snakes in the world and is believed to have caused several deaths and poisonings by snakebites in India . Venom from this snake does severe damage within just a matter of seconds. And so, proper treatment should be offered immediately. Mandal, who was bitten on his right arm, had tightly pressed the wound to prevent venom from spreading. He took the snake with him so doctors could identify it, which was important to give the correct anti-venom. After Mandal was admitted, his family put the snake in a sack for safety.
Reaction from the public and medical staff
The hospital staff and patients were immensely shocked by the presence of such a venomous snake. Even though many people stayed away, some helped Mandal through the hospital to make sure of his safety and others. At one point, even while lying on a stretcher in immense pain, Mandal refused to let go of the snake. Doctors told him that he could not hold onto the snake, as it made treatment difficult, and he finally let go of it.
The snake’s role in Bhagalpur
Russell's Vipers are known to be very common in Bhagalpur. They are found in farming areas and even in houses. Many incidents can be seen in which these snakes were found in local houses and schools too.
Mandal carrying the snake along with him to the hospital was very unusual but was the right decision because he wanted proper medical care. The incident emphasizes the danger of snakebites in rural areas where people tend to encounter such venomous species very often.
Mandal's present condition
Mandal's condition remains stable and is being monitored carefully, though the exact health position cannot be confirmed yet, his quick thinking and bravery in this unsafe situation rapidly became the focus of attention and caught the spotlight. The snake was handed over safely to the forest department for continued required measures.

Classic example of what NOT to do in case of a snakebite - either as a victim or as a medical responder. @Priyanka_SHE @Mr_Mahadev94 @MoHFW_INDIA https://t.co/a1K4geJF9N
