Indians are deeply passionate about cricket– it’s more than just a sport, it’s an emotion. Among all formats, the IPL holds a special place. Every year, the Indian Premier League brings a wave of excitement across the country, with fans eagerly waiting for the tournament months in advance. It's not just about the matches; it’s about the energy, the team rivalries, and the celebrations that come with it. Cricket, especially the IPL, has become a shared experience for millions– something people look forward to, talk about, and connect over.

But this year, that excitement has hit a pause. Due to rising geopolitical tensions and clashes, the 2025 edition of the IPL has been suspended. According to a TOI report, on Friday, May 9, the BCCI officially suspended the tournament, citing national security and player safety as their top priorities.

As of now, 16 matches are still left to be played, and fans across the country are hoping for a quick resolution so the cricket action can get back on track. Amid the ongoing tension, the love and craze for the IPL hasn’t faded. Indians, as always, haven’t held back– they’ve taken to social media to express their frustration, and they’re doing it the most Indian way possible: with honesty, humour, and a whole lot of memes.

Social media has now become a venting ground, where fans are turning their disappointment into hilarious posts, jokes, and memes, all dedicated to the sudden suspension of their beloved IPL. And of course, we’ve rounded up some of the best ones for you.

How IPL began

The Indian Premier League, or IPL, started in 2008, launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It quickly became one of the most loved cricket leagues, not just in India but around the world.

The first-ever match was played on April 18, 2008, between Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Shah Rukh Khan, and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. With eight teams backed by celebrities and big names, the tournament became an instant hit with fans.

IPL through the years

Since then, the IPL has become a huge event. It now has 10 teams and runs for about two months, ending with the playoffs and the final match. It’s also a big platform for young Indian players to show their talent. Many of them have done well here and then gone on to play for the national team. Big international names like AB de Villiers, David Warner, and Pat Cummins have also added to the thrill of the league.
