THANE: The Mumbra police in Thane booked a man for illegal landfilling and destruction of mangroves near a creek area in Diva. The case was registered following a complaint from the Tehsildar of Thane, said a police officer.
The matter came to light following a media report highlighting mangrove destruction in the Desai Creek area of Diva. Accordingly, concerned officials conducted an immediate site inspection at the location near Ugreshwar Temple at Ganesh Ghat, the complaint with the police stated.
“The investigation revealed unauthorised landfilling activities in a protected coastal zone. Officials documented extensive levelling of the mangrove area and construction of boundary walls within the protected ecosystem,” said a police officer quoting the complaint filed with the Mumbra police.
The land in question measures around 4 hectares and falls under the restricted development category, with specific prohibitions against property transfers and alterations, added the police officer.
Mumbra police filed charges under Sections 15 and 17 of the Environmental Protection Act, 1986. Photographic evidence of the environmental damage was submitted with the formal complaint, the officer said.
The police stated that they lodged the probe into the matter and are investigating this case.
