Two houses that Rata Tata designed still stand tall in Jamshedpur

JAMSHEDPUR: In the heart of Jamshedpur’s posh Circuit House area in Bistupur, two architectural marvels stand tall. These twin houses, located on Road No. 10 in CH Area (East), were designed by none other than late Ratan Tata, the chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, who also held a BSc in architecture with specialisation in structural engineering from Cornell University, USA.

One of the houses is now owned by T Mukherjee, Tata Steel's former deputy managing director, and Trilok Singh, a city-based hotelier. The other house, currently serving as the guest house of Tarapore company, is owned by Cawas Mehta, a former Tata Steel executive. Both houses were constructed during the time when Tata was visiting the city during initial days. Since then, the structures were a piece of impeccable design and open spaces.

“Three years ago, architectural students from Gujarat, who were on an educational tour to the city, had come to see the house. The students were charmed by its open spaces and impeccable architecture,” said Mukherjee in an interview with TOI. The building features a kitchen and drawing room on the ground floor, with bedrooms on the first floor. The spacious design allows for ample natural light and incorporates elements of the Prairie American style.

Mukherjee acquired one-third of the house in 2007 from Soli Devitre, the brother-in-law of former Tata Sons director Jehangir Ghandy. The architectural design of the building bears the signature style of world-renowned architect Frank Loyd Wright, whom Tata greatly admired.

The second house, now serving as a guest house, mirrors the design and spaciousness of its twin.
