Ranchi: A 17-year-old boy named Manish Kachhap of Hazaribag underwent a successful, yet complex neurosurgical procedure at the Rajendra Institute for Medical Sciences (Rims) recently to remove a metal fragment that had become embedded in his brain.

The incident took place on September 30 when Manish was near a firing range in Sitagarh, retrieving his goats during a training exercise. A blast from the rehearsal caused a metal piece to penetrate the left side of his brain and reach right side.

The intricate surgery, which took four hours, was conducted by a team of doctors led by Dr Anand Prakash, the head of the neurosurgery department at Rims. The main challenge faced by the surgeons was the size and location of the metal fragment, which was lodged in the Sylvian fissure.

Dr Prakash said, “Locating the metal using C-arm fluoroscopy machine was like finding a needle in a haystack. Focus was on saving his life. There are no post-surgical complications.”
