Former Jharkhand CMs share memorable stints with Ratan Tata

RANCHI: While Jamshedpur, country’s first planned industrial township founded by the Tatas over a century ago, was also in the heart of late Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, who breathed his last on Wednesday night, former chief ministers of Jharkhand, who served under various periods, have recalled how the legendary industrialist was always keen and excited to contribute in state’s development.

After formation of Jharkhand in 2000, incumbent state BJP president Babulal Marandi became the first chief minister. Condoling his death, Marandi said that he was always touched and in awe of Ratan Tata’s humility.

“Like the 140 crore Indians, I too are sad over the news today. Beacon of nation’s industrial revolution at global map, Ratan Tataji was equally dedicated to serve this newly created state to stand on its own. During my brief stint as CM, I had the opportunity to personally meet him to discuss various plans for developments, and he was ready for everything. Unfortunately, the govt fell and my plans for stalled,” he said, citing scores of philanthropic works undertaken both in state and nationally to underscore Tata’s ‘humbleness’.

Speaking to TOI, former union minister and former CM Arjun Munda recalled the rapport he shared with visionary during 2004-06. Munda was also the first to host dinner in Ranchi in honour of Ratan Tata for rounds of investment talks since then.

“I remember, when there was an issue of Tata lease going on, I had requested him to also expand the ambit of their works across different sectors in the state, which he agreed sooner than I had expected,” he recalled.
