Kochi: Pathanamthitta district Congress committee (DCC) vice-president M G Kannan passed away on Sunday. He was 42. Kannan was rushed to a private hospital in Parumala after he felt uneasiness during a party meeting on Saturday.
Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony said that Kannan was admitted to the hospital on Saturday following neurological issues. He said all possible options were explored by the medical team but his life couldn't be saved. Public homage is organized at Adoor and Pathanamthitta on Monday. Antony recalled Kannan as a strong Congress worker all his life until his last breath.
Rahul Mamkoottathil, MLA, said that Kannan's passing was quite unexpected. He said that initial medical reports were positive before his health condition suddenly worsened. He mentioned that they looked into the possibility of shifting him to various prominent hospitals in the country by sharing medical reports with them but there was heavy risk involved in shifting, and none of the hospitals expressed confidence. His life was being sustained using a ventilator, and he passed on Sunday, Mamkoottathil said.
Former opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said in a condolence message that Kannan was a prominent young Congress leader in Pathanamthitta who made significant contributions not only to the party but also to parliamentary democracy. At a young age, he was elected twice as a district panchayat member and served in positions, including acting DCC president. In the last assembly election, he contested as the UDF candidate from Adoor constituency and was narrowly defeated, he said.
