ABC News moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis fact-checked former President Donald Trump during Tuesday night’s presidential debate, promptly correcting falsehoods on abortion, immigration, and the 2020 election. The decision to fact-check live marked a shift from recent debate formats and contrasted with CNN's approach during the June debate, where moderators refrained from correcting false claims in real-time.
The FBI recently revised its 2022 violent crime data, reversing a reported decrease in crime. Democrats emphasized this figure in September 2023 to refute Donald Trump's assertions that crime was increasing. Initially, the Bureau reported in September 2022 that violent crime had decreased by 2.1%. However, additional murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults have been reported, accounting for a 4.5% rise in violent crime. The FBI merely announced the modification on its website, without making any official notice about it. Experts were concerned about this modification. The changes were deemed noteworthy and unique by Carl Moody of the College of William & Mary. Dr. Thomas Marvell, president of Justec Research, noted, "It is up to the FBI to explain what they have done, and they haven’t explained these large changes."Trump claimed Democrats support abortion until the ninth month, falsely stating, “They’re in favor of executing babies after birth.” Moderator Linsey Davis immediately countered, clarifying, “No state in this country allows the killing of babies after birth.”Minutes later, Trump alleged that migrants in Ohio were “killing pets” for food, citing Springfield as an example. Moderator David Muir responded, saying ABC News had contacted the city manager, who reported no credible evidence supporting this claim. “The city manager denies such incidents involving the immigrant community,” Muir stated. Despite Muir’s correction, Trump maintained his stance, claiming, “People are on television saying the dog was eaten.”ABC's moderators interjected often during the discussion to correct misconceptions. Muir once questioned Trump on a recent statement implying that a "whisker" was the reason he lost the 2020 election. In reply, Trump stated, "I said that in a satirical way. I refuse to accept it. Muir turned to face Vice President Kamala Harris, pointing out that Trump would not back down. Harris restated that Trump's position compromised the fairness of the election. After the debate, CNN's Daniel Dale revealed that, in contrast to Harris, Trump had made at least 33 incorrect claims. Trump's performance was deemed "staggeringly dishonest" by Dale. Supporters of Trump criticized ABC for fact-checking him live, accusing the network of prejudice and Megyn Kelly of labeling it "a pile-on." Donald Trump Jr. In previous elections, disputes have arisen over moderators' choices regarding live fact-checking. When Candy Crowley of CNN corrected Mitt Romney in a 2012 debate with Barack Obama, she received outrage. Chris Wallace of Fox News and Kristen Welker of NBC mostly abstained from making in-the-moment adjustments by the 2020 election. In the past, David Chalian, the political director of CNN, claimed that moderators should "facilitate and moderate, not participate," and that debate stages are not the best places for fact-checking. There are differences about the media's place in the real-time discussion of elections, as seen by ABC's decision to aggressively fact-check from the platform. Some who support Trump argue that the network's actions benefited Harris, while others view it as an essential step toward actively combating disinformation.Hey @DavidMuir you owe America an apology. I’ll wait…
