In a significant stride towards India’s Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) and strengthening indigenous maritime capabilities, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) today, on July 29, 2025, successfully launched the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS ATAL (Yard 1275) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at Vasco-da-Gama, Goa.
This advanced vessel is the sixth in a series of eight FPVs being constructed by GSL—India’s premier Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence. The entire design and construction process has been executed indigenously by GSL, underscoring India’s growing competence in homegrown shipbuilding.
The ICGS ATAL measures 52 metres in length, with a beam of 8 metres and a displacement of 320 tonnes. Engineered for high-speed maritime operations, the vessel will be instrumental in a wide array of tasks including coastal patrolling, island security, offshore asset protection, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search & rescue operations, thereby significantly enhancing India’s maritime domain awareness and national security infrastructure.
Speaking at the launch, Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, CMD of GSL, remarked, “ICGS Atal’s launch is a testament to Team GSL’s resilience and steadfast dedication to indigenisation, innovation, and excellence in shipbuilding, despite facing global supply chain hurdles.”
Shri Rozy Agarwal, Principal Internal Financial Advisor (PIFA), Coast Guard Headquarters, and Chief Guest for the occasion, commended GSL’s strong project execution and its vital contribution to India’s maritime preparedness and defence self-reliance.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence, key industry partners, and GSL representatives, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards maritime self-reliance.
With each vessel launched, GSL continues to reaffirm its position as a cornerstone of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing and shipbuilding excellence.
