While some of the best brains in Britain appear on University Challenge, one topic seemed to leave most of the players completely stumped this Monday. The episode saw four students from the University of Bath take on opponents from the University of Southampton as they battled it out in a first-round match.
Hosted by Amol Rajan, the BBC quiz show fired out questions to the academics with most being more difficult than not. After successfully banging out correct answers to questions about science, literature, and maths, there was one topic that left the contestants seemingly scratching their heads - much to the amusement of those watching at home. There was a music round with clips being played into the studio as the players had to name the artists who were the voices behind the songs.
Amol gave the clue of the first artist writing a song to reflect her friendship with Nellee Hooper. The music then blasted throughout the studio as the Southampton team conferred, but appeared very unsure. The song was one by Bjork, which the Southampton team managed to answer correctly, although not confidently.
The next clue was: "This singer sang this song in honour of her collaboration with Marvin Gaye." The clip then played as the contestants appeared to be clueless. One player shook his head as he admitted: "I don't know."
After some conferring the team decided to pass, as Amol revealed: "It's Diana Ross." While the team seemed to struggle, fans at home branded the round as "easy" and gloated over how many they got right themselves.
"P*** easy music round #UniversityChallenge," one declared on Twitter, while another complained: "This is a boring match #UniversityChallenge"
Another shared an image of two men tied up and chatting to each other, as they captioned it: "#UniversityChallenge 'And then the music round is all sort of Pop Music, and bugger me, I got three right! Boom! I is on fire, isn't it?'"
A fourth penned: "Geeks you might know all sorts of elements but if you don't know The Boss Miss Ross, I can't help you #UniversityChallenge."
