Terror attack alert for Brits travelling to popular European country - 'high threat'

A beautiful country in Europe popular among Brits has been placed under a terror warning. has updated its advice for UK citizens travelling to , warning of the "high threat" of a .

For those planning a trip to the European hotspot, the government urges travellers to "stay aware of your surroundings at all times." The guidance states there is a global threat affecting UK interests and British nationals at the moment, "including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets".

The FCDO says that terrorism attacks in Austria could be "indiscriminate", highlighting places frequented by foreign nationals as potential targets.

These include: Public transport, national and international transport hubs, music, sporting and cultural events, entertainment establishments and nightlife venues, government buildings and international institutions and places of worship and religious sites.

The guidance strongly advises visitors to be vigilant in public places and to follow the advice of local authorities.

The FCDO points to multiple incidents that have occurred over the past five years, stating that a number of arrests have been made.

They also offered reassurance that Austrian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans and that Brits can expect to see an increased police presence, and additional safety measures may be in place.

Just this year on 15 February, one person was killed and five injured in central Villach, Carinthia, southern Austria following a horrific knife attack.

Another example highlighted was from 2020 where four people were killed and 23 injured in a terrorism-related shooting in central Vienna.

The government also issued advice on political demonstrations, crime, cultural differences and outdoor activities.

Despite overall crime levels being generally low, there are higher levels of petty crime, particularly pickpocketing, in the big city centres and city parks after dark. The FCDO warns that thieves use a variety of methods to distract people.

"Take care on public transport and in crowded city centres including main stations. Be particularly careful with your belongings on international trains and when you take your baggage from trains and coaches," the guidance says.
