Prince Harry was warned that if he ever wants to reconcile with the Royal Family, he should do it while King Charles is still monarch, as his brother, Prince William, will never forgive him, a royal commentator has said. The Duke of Sussex saw his relationship with the Royal Family turn frosty after he stepped down as a senior working royal and moved to the US five years ago, unleashing a series of attacks against them in the meantime.
Harry has made various accusations against the royals, including his brother, the Prince of Wales, through a series of interviews, his bombshell docuseries on Netflix with wife Meghan Markle, Harry & Meghan, and his explosive memoir, Spare. A recent "secret peace summit" in London between Harry and the King's aides sparked hope that a path to reconciliation could be in the works. But according to a royal expert, the Duke is facing a big problem as his "homecoming depends" on Prince William, and he will not take it lightly.
William's aides were not present at London's recent talks with sources claiming it the heir will be harder for Harry to crack than his father.
Royal historian Tessa Dunlop said that it was going well so far for Harry and his quest for reconciliation, as the British public could eventually forgive him if he ever were to come back into the royal fold.
But he said Harry's biggest challenge is to soften his brother, Prince William, with whom he is reportedly not on speaking terms.
Dr Dunlop wrote for the Independent: "So far, so good; the road ahead is long and not straightforward, but it is hopeful.
"A softer, forgiving King, and a happier Harry, (who I suspect still covets the half-in, half-out role he mooted five years ago), is an infinitely more appealing prospect than the current cold war statis."
But she added: "However, when it comes to royal relations, a (crucial) third party was absent from the balcony. Subsequently, the Prince and Princess of Wales have reportedly been less than impressed with a 'peace summit' about which they knew nothing. Ouch [...]
"William still bears a grudge - can you blame him? Siblings play by very different rules."
She spoke about how Harry and William's relationship crumbled from love to hate, adding that it will "take years for the future king to trust again, if he ever can".
She said: "Harry alluded to this when acknowledging there were some in the Royal Family who would never forgive him for what he had written."
The expert drew comparisons between William and Harry with Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, who ascended the throne in 1936, after his brother, the Duke of Windsor, abdicated, and their relationship never healed.
She concluded: "At the moment, King Charles is Harry's only hope. If the Prince wants to make a meaningful comeback, it needs to be done sooner rather than later.
"And even then, a Sussex return to the sunlit uplands of royalty may well prove short-lived. William is not a man for turning, and as the 'spare' knows all too well, one day the Prince of Wales will have all the power."
