had travelled to Argentina to catch his former bandmate 's show on October 2 - and had turned it into a full-blown holiday.

He was still in the capital, Buenos Aires, yesterday evening when he tragically fell from the third floor balcony of his hotel room, dying instantly of catastrophic injuries. Now the reality is sinking in for fans that the meeting between the two was the last related reunion he'd had before his death.

One heartbroken fan wrote in the comments of a post advertising his Latin American tour: "Im so sorry! You were the last 1D member to have the chance to talk with him. Hope you had a great time together and you find peace soon." Another lamented: "Niall being the one to see him when Liam is alive from One Direction for the last time," punctuating their feelings with a tearful emoji.

"Directioners are crying all over the world," exclaimed a third, while a fourth chimed in that their heart was "crumbling" from the pain. "Strength Niall, this must be more painful for you than for us, since you really knew him and since you spent years of your life with Liam," one fan counselled.

They continued: "This will mark all of us who have followed his rise to fame from the band One Direction but without a doubt this blow was worse for you since you were more than a band, you were friends and even family during those years together, a lot of strength!!! We love you. We will always love and remember Liam...."

Someone else added that they hoped the band members would have the chance to "grieve in peace" and find comfort through mutually reminiscing.

following the loss of their "brother".

His bandmate Louis Tomlinson wrote a lengthy and heartfelt message on Instagram, revealing: "I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got a chance to see the kind brother I'd longed all my life for."

More than four million fans pressed the like button on his post in just 45 minutes, as he admitted he was "struggling with the idea of saying goodbye".

He addressed the pair "speaking on the phone for hours", before admitting: "Reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I'd have with you for life."

Meanwhile, Niall's brother Gregg, who is one year his senior, also took to Instagram, confessing: " To say I'm heartbroken is an understatement.

He added: "You will be forever missed Liam. Words can't describe how much I want to grab my brother and mind him now while the world shows their memories of you and him and the boys.

"My heart goes out to your family parents and sisters and your son Bear and your 1D brothers. 10th October we met and we started out that evening as 5 families into one big one 1D family thank you for all the laughs bro... 1D 4 LIFE x x x (sic)."
