Five people have died after a bus crashed in New York state, the United States, on Friday. The crash occurred near Pembroke, close to Buffalo, as the bus was taking 54 people from Niagara Falls to New York City.
According to reports, the driver of the tour bus allegedly became distracted before overcorrecting in an attempt to regain control of the vehicle. Images showed emergency services responding at the scene with the bus on its side.
Helicopters were sent to pick up those injured and take them to the hospital for treatment.
At least two injured children and two injured adults had been flown to hospitals nearby, the New York Times reported.
Sky News reports that the 5 people pronounced dead at the scene were all adults.
The passengers were aged between one and 74.
According to reports, several passengers were injured, with some even trapped under the bus.
New York State Police (NYSP) spokesperson James O'Callaghan told reporters that it is believed that many of the passengers didn't have a seatbelt on.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted after the accident.
"I've been briefed on the tragic tour bus accident on the @NYSThruway," New York Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted after the accident.
"My team is coordinating closely with @nyspolice and local officials who are working to rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved."
New York State Attorney General Letitia James said the crash is "heartbreaking."
She added: "I'm praying for everyone impacted. Grateful to our first responders on the scene working to rescue and help people."
