Shnaider enjoyed instant success with Safina, earning a 6-0 6-0 victory over Anastasija Sevastova on her way to the last 16 in the Caja Magica. But, after sealing another double bagel at the Italian Open on Thursday, the world No. 11 confirmed they had parted ways.
The 13th seed in Rome this fortnight, Shnaider breezed past Caroline Dolehide in her opening match, needing just 50 minutes to get the job done.
But her new coach was noticeably absent, and the 21-year-old later revealed that their work together had already concluded.
"She returned back home to Barcelona. She needed that," Shnaider told after booking her spot in round three.
While Shnaider gave few details about their split, she spoke highly of her time with Safina.
The world No. 11 added: "The experience, of course, was great. She's a former world No. 1, so she gave me a lot of those tips on how to stay focused in a match and not to let those negative emotions ruin your game and mental skills.
"For sure, those are things I learned and I'll try to use them as much as I can so I can get better each day."
Shnaider and Safina announced the news of their coaching partnership ahead of the European clay-court swing, sharing a selfie together from the practice court.
During the recent Madrid Open, the 21-year-old said Safina was already impacting her mentality, helping her overcome negativity during tough moments on the court.
Shnaider made it all the way to the round of 16 at the Caja Magica before losing to world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in three sets.
The Russian recovered after getting bagelled in the first set and was able to force a decider but Swiatek won 6-0 6-7(3) 6-4.
With Safina no longer in her corner, Shnaider will be hoping to continue her impressive run in Rome. The 13th seed takes on Jaqueline Cristian for a spot in the last 16.
