's latest true crime series Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story is already sparking a reaction from viewers ahead of its release - with fans calling it "traumatising". Dropping on May 14, the new three-part docuseries promises to be the most in-depth look yet into the lives and crimes of Britain's most notorious killer couple. Spanning 20 years of brutality, Fred and Rose West raped, tortured and murdered at least 12 young women between 1967 and 1987, with many of the crimes carried out at their Gloucester home - now infamous as the "house of horrors".
Victims included Ann McFall, Catherine 'Rena' Costello, Charmaine West, Lynda Gough, Carole Ann Cooper, Lucy Partington, Therese Siegenthaler, Shirley Hubbard, Juanita Mott, Shirley Anne Robinson, Alison Chambers, and their own daughter, Heather West. The series, produced by Blink Films, has been billed by as "the definitive documentary series revealing the lives and crimes of Britain's most notorious and prolific husband and wife serial killers."
In a press release, Netflix confirmed the series will feature "previously unseen police video and unheard audio recordings", offering a new layer of insight into the investigation that eventually brought the pair to justice.
Crucially, the series will also give a voice to the families of those murdered - with some of the victims' family members, a few of whom are appearing on camera for the first time. Their testimony is set to shed light on the years of unanswered questions, grief, and trauma they endured.
The episodes are titled Fred, Rose, and The Trial, and will walk viewers through the shocking investigation, arrests, and eventual court proceedings. Police unearthed the victims' remains during extensive digs at the Wests' Cromwell Street home, building a case that finally brought some closure to the devastated families.
The new documentary follows the success of Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story, Netflix's 2022 hit which also explored decades of abuse by one of the UK's most well-known media figures.
It also joins a long list of West-related documentaries, including a Channel 5 series of the same title and Fred and Rose West: The Real Story with Trevor McDonald. The case even inspired Appropriate Adult, the BAFTA-winning Channel 4 drama starring Dominic West as Fred.
Alongside the West series, Netflix has also announced Grenfell (working title), a one-off 90-minute documentary produced by Rogan Productions - the team behind Uprising and The Search for Nicola Bulley.
The film will "painstakingly connect the long and disturbing chain of events" that led to the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed 72 lives in West London. Netflix says it will "highlight each warning and failing, revealing it to be the inevitable result of Government neglect and cynical industry practices."
The documentary will feature testimonies from survivors, bereaved families, and first responders, giving a voice to those most affected by one of Britain's worst modern disasters.
