All gardeners have been urged to plant one simple flower in their gardens.
There is a wide range of flowers you can choose for your outdoor space but Joseph Clark, who shares tips to grow fruit and vegetables and is the author of Garden To Save The World, has named one he believes should be in every . He praised nasturtiums for being "possibly the most useful plant" he has.
Nasturtiums are edible with a distinctive peppery taste, often used in salads and as garnishes. The pro recommends all those with outdoor areas grow this pretty, colourful .
Joe posted a video on where he said: "This here is one simple that I recommend in every garden. Every part of my garden has to have nasturtiums.
"What's really cool is the whole plant, including the flowers, the seed pods and even the leaves are 100 per cent edible. But more importantly, they're fantastic when planted in your vegetable patch because absolutely everything loves to eat them." He added that " and snails can't get enough of nasturtium foliage" and cabbage butterflies lay their caterpillar eggs underneath the leaves.
This means nasturtiums act as a "natural pest control" by helping to keep unwanted garden visitors away from your prized crops. Joe added that now is the perfect time to pick up a few cheap nasturtium plants from the shops or sow some seeds to plant all around your garden, where each year they'll "grow, bloom and self-seed to return every spring, giving you an almost endless supply all from a few cheap plants."
In the caption of his TikTok video, Joe states that there are "so many reasons" why he recommends having nasturtiums all over your garden. The gardening expert wrote: "Not only are nasturtiums a very pretty and easy to grow flower, they are possibly the most useful plant I've got in the garden.
"Every part is completely edible, and I think is delicious when added to a summer salad, giving off a taste similar to rocket. They are super simple and easy to grow, and once planted out will pretty much look after themselves."
He further mentioned that the main reason why he grows this flower is for organic pest control. Joe concluded: "Not only are they super useful, but if you plant one or two nasturtium plants, you will have them pretty much for life.
"While they will die back each year, they will self seed. The following spring you will notice lots of little nasturtium seedlings popping up in that area. Thin them out and keep the strongest to start the cycle all over again."
His TikTok video has garnered 160,500 views, 9,907 likes and more than 100 comments, at the time of writing. One fellow gardener in the comment section shared: "I make a pesto using the nasturtium leaves and flowers! Good way to bulk up a basil pesto, and it's [a] delicious peppery flavour!."
Another added: "I till my garden once a year, I planted these guys once, 10yrs ago. I've never had to reseed. They are currently growing now. Once they drop seeds they live there now."
A third commented: "I've got a bunch in purple and a white/yellow colour as they are so good to hide dodgy fencing too." A fourth chimed in: "These are possibly my favourite plant."
