Elina Svitolina has revealed that she and her husband, ATP veteran , were both called for an anti-doping test hours after she . The tennis power couple jetted straight to Madrid for the upcoming 1000 tournament, where they received an unusual wake-up call.
The world No. 17 took to social media to share a snap after they both underwent doping controls. Tennis players must give their location for an hour every day so that a doping control officer can test them at random, and Svitolina and Monfils both got a random visit on Monday morning.
"'Love' the early mornings when we're in sync with doping controls," Svitolina wrote on her Instagram story, alongside a photo of a plaster across hers and Monfils' arms, indicating that they had just given blood.
The couple, who went public with their relationship in 2019 and got married in 2021, arrived in Madrid late on Sunday after the Ukrainian was crowned the champion in Rouen.
Monfils watched on from her box as Svitolina defeated Olga Danilovic 6-4 7-6(8) to claim her first title in two years, and her 18th overall. Afterwards, the pair took a private jet to Spain for the Madrid Open.
Svitolina also had a blunder ordering a car to their accommodation once they had landed. The newly-crowned champion booked an Uber XL to ensure they had enough room for their stuff, but it backfired.
Monfils shared a hilarious video of the vehicle that Svitolina called. It turned out to be a minibus with several rows of seats - more than enough for the couple and Svitolina's coach, Andy Bettles.
"We just landed in Madrid, and my wife tells me she ordered an Uber XL. Well... have a look. That's the Uber XL," the ATP No. 42 joked.
"Now she wins a tournament and immediately starts booking Uber XLs!"
After their glamorous trip to Madrid with a private jet and a huge Uber, Svitolina and Monfils received a reality check when they were woken up early to complete an anti-doping test.
The couple will now turn their attention to the Madrid Open, where Svitolina has a tough record. The 30-year-old has never been beyond the second round and has only won three matches at the tournament in her career.
As the 17th seed, she has a bye into round two and will face Jaqueline Cristian or British No. 3 Sonay Kartal.
Monfils does not benefit from a bye. Instead, he takes on a qualifier in round one. If he advances, defending champion and No. 7 seed awaits in the second round.
