With over 300 recognised breeds globally, finding the right dog to suit your lifestyle can be overwhelming. While some prefer small lap dogs they can carry around, others are drawn to high-energy dog breeds that thrive on long walks and regular exercise. According to one expert, however, there is one dog breed that tops them all.

Clinical canine behaviourist Will Atherton said that the Labrador Retriever is the best dog in the world and insisted that this is not up for debate. He praised Labradors for their intelligence, friendly nature and calm temperament. He claimed that if everyone chose a Labrador as their first dog, there would be over 50% fewer dogs in shelters, as many behavioural issues stem from people choosing breeds they're not prepared for.

In a TikTok video that's racked up nearly 40,000 likes, he said: "Labradors are the best dog breed in the world and it's not really a discussion that I'm open to having a debate on because in my opinion it's simply facts.

"Labradors were bred to be amazing with people, hyper-intelligent, amazing with other dogs, calm, relaxed and stable and not have any form of aggression in them whatsoever.

"Paired with a huge desire to please their owners and an incredible food and toy drive, which makes them super easy to train."

Labradors are known for being highly trainable, good-tempered, outgoing and friendly. Their loving and affectionate nature makes them a favourite among families. However, their big appetites can make them prone to weight gain, so regular exercise is key to keeping them healthy and fit.

One person commented on the TikTok video, "Best breed ever," while someone else added, "I'm convinced everyone needs a Labrador! At least once! Especially children! Labs are simply the absolute best breed ever."

While Labrador Retrievers remain one of the most beloved breeds worldwide, they're facing growing competition. According to the American Kennel Club, the French Bulldog overtook the Labrador as the most popular dog in 2024. The Golden Retriever, German Shepherd and Poodle followed in the top five.

In the UK, Pets4Homes reported that while Labradors have recently slipped slightly in breed rankings due to the rise of trendy crossbreeds like Cockapoos, they remain a favourite, especially for families and first-time owners.

Popularity doesn't always mean practicality. Some popular breeds, like French Bulldogs and Dachshunds, are prone to more health issues. French Bulldogs, for instance, often suffer from breathing difficulties, while Dachshunds are particularly vulnerable to Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) due to their long backs.

Ultimately, the best dog breed for you will depend on you and your lifestyle. Retired individuals may prefer a more relaxed companion, while active owners might want a high-energy dog to match their pace, and families with young children often gravitate towards patient, gentle breeds like the Labrador.

It is also important to keep in mind that choosing the "best breed" isn't enough to guarantee a well-behaved pet. Training plays a crucial role in shaping a dog's behaviour, regardless of the breed of the pet.
