As temperatures drop and households turn up the heating, energy experts are warning Brits that one widespread myth could be driving up bills by hundreds of pounds each winter. Many homeowners believe that leaving the heating on low all day is more efficient than turning it on only when needed, but specialists say this is a costly misconception.
According to Grant Store, a leading energy solutions provider, the idea of keeping heating on continuously is outdated and does not match how modern heating systems are designed to operate.
A spokesperson said: "Running your heating all day, even at a low temperature, means your system is constantly using energy,
"You are effectively paying to replace heat that escapes through walls, windows, and roofs, even when no one is home."
Experts advise that heating a property only when it is occupied, and using timers or thermostats to manage temperatures, is far more efficient. Modern boilers and heat pumps are designed to reach their ideal operating temperature quickly, meaning turning the heating on when needed and off when it isn't required helps minimise waste and control costs.
Homes with poor insulation are particularly vulnerable to energy waste. Heat can escape rapidly, so keeping the heating on constantly only increases unnecessary energy use.
They added: "The best investment you can make is improving insulation, sealing draughts, and ensuring windows and doors are fitted properly.
"This keeps the heat in and your bills down."
Smart thermostats can further reduce wasted energy by learning when a home is occupied and adjusting heating schedules automatically. This ensures heating only runs when needed, helping maintain comfort without driving up bills.
The experts note that the misconception stems from older heating systems, which took much longer to reach operating temperature.
They added: "Decades ago, keeping heating on constantly could make sense. Modern technology is far more responsive, so turning your heating on as needed is now the most cost-effective option."
Breaking this myth could save households a significant sum over the winter. They said: "Leaving your heating on all day is one of the most expensive mistakes homeowners make. With the right settings, insulation, and schedule, you can stay warm and comfortable without wasting energy or overspending."
