Bananas can stay fresh for five days longer if you store them with one simple household item. Bananas are a popular fruit for Brits to buy, but we very rarely buy too many of them unless we know we are going to use them soon. That's because bananas can be quite hard to keep fresh. Before you know it, you might notice it going brown and mushy, meaning it can only be used for something like a homemade banana bread.
If you want to keep your bananas fresher for longer, then there is a simple hack you can use. And the great thing is, it only involves one other kitchen item that you probably have sitting in your cupboard or pantry. One person shared her review of this hack, revealing that it helped her bananas to stay fresh for five more days than usual. Taking to YouTube, the life hack user showed how simple it is to do.
All you need is clingfilm. This handy kitchen item is often used to wrap up leftovers, pre-made sandwiches and freshly cooked dishes that are going in the fridge. But you may not have realised that it can keep your bananas fresh for longer.
The science behind it is simple. The YouTuber, Vijaya Selvaraju, takes a small piece of cling film and wraps it around the stem of the banana. Where you place it is important.
The stem is where the enzyme gas escapes from the banana, which is what makes the fruit rot. However, the cling film can stop this from happening.
There are numerous ways to keep your bananas fresher for longer. Some people go as far as to chop them up and place them into jars, which they say can help their bananas last an extra 26 days.
Others simply keep their bananas away from other fruits to slow down the ripening process. Meanwhile, some people will always opt for storing their bananas in their fridge to keep them fresher for longer, but this will only work for so long.
People took to the comments section of the YouTube video to share their thoughts on the hack. One person wrote: " It's amazing, I preserved bananas for 1 week easily. Very effective."
