Netflix adds Inbetweeners writer's 'timeless' romance 'grounded in laughter' this week

Netflix is set to drop a "timeless romance" that will be "grounded in laughter", and fans don't have long left to wait.

My Oxford Year is a brand new romance which is directed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, known for his work on the Inbetweeners. Based on the novel by Julia Whelan, fans can expect to laugh and cry as it follows Anna (Sofia Carson), an ambitious young American woman who sets out for the UK.

Fulfilling her childhood dream, Anna has her life on track, until she meets local Jamie (Corey Mylchreest) who completely changes both of their lives. A Netflix synopsis reads: "An ambitious American fulfilling her dream of studying at Oxford falls for a charming Brit hiding a secret that may upend her perfectly planned life."

Star Sofia Carson, who is also executive producer for the film, has teased fans with what they can expect. She added: "Iain Morris wrote and created one of the most iconic shows in British television, The Inbetweeners.

"Comedy is his language, so his vision of this film beautifully created a timeless, heartbreaking, sweeping romance, grounded in laughter. Within one scene you may fall madly in love, you may cry, but he will always make sure the joy of laughter is present."

According to Netflix's Tudum, Carson knew she’d found the Jamie to her Anna from the start, admitting she watched Queen Charlotte in awe.

The star said: "When it came time to cast Jamie, I always knew it would be Corey."

Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte star Corey also teased fans with plenty of tears and laughter as he said: "You can expect some laughs, a lot of love, maybe some sadness, a couple of surprises along the way, but [you can expect] to meet two really lovely, very human characters and all of their amazing friends and family. Get ready for a lovely journey."

As well as Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest (known for his role in Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte), fans will also see Dougray Scott (Hitman) as William Davenport and Catherine McCormack (Braveheart) as Antonia Davenport.

Harry Trevaldwyn (How To Train Your Dragon) will also play Charlie Butler and Esmé Kingdom (Fallen) as Maggie Timbs.

And fans cannot wait. Taking to social media, one person said: "Whoosh! Love it."

Another added: "Can’t wait to see my queen again." A third echoed: "So excited, can't wait."

My Oxford Year is available to stream on Netflix on August 1.
