In a recent LinkedIn post, Megha Upadhyay, a journalist, shared an ordeal her family faced during their family’s visit to the Khatu Shyam Temple in Rajasthan. Her mother wanted to use the loo, but they couldn't find nearby.
She posted her experience, pointing out the lack of washrooms within the temple premises and how they had to pay hundreds of rupees to use a restroom at a nearby hotel.
Upadhyay mentioned that her mother experienced a health emergency and urgently needed a restroom, but there was none nearby. So, they rushed to hotel which billed them for the washroom usage.
The has since raised concerns about the lack of basic amenities at popular tourist destinations.
Recounting the experience, she wrote, “I went to Khatu Shyam in Rajasthan with my family. It was my mother’s long-time wish to visit the temple. At 6 AM, we left our hotel for darshan, and by 7, we were in the queue. We stood for two long hours—no complaints...While we were waiting, my mother suddenly started feeling extremely unwell".
More details
Upadhyay’s mother became ill while waiting. She began experiencing nausea, stomach pain, and an intense urge to vomit. Her father tried looking for a washroom nearby, but couldn't come across any usable ones.
“Papa looked around desperately for a washroom… But there was nothing usable. No washroom near the temple area around 1 km. A few public bathing areas, but no proper restroom,” the journalist explained in the post.
As her mother’s condition worsened, the family went to a nearby hotel, requesting with the receptionist to use the restroom.
“We begged the person at reception—We don’t need a room, just the restroom, just for 5-10 minutes. Please, it’s an emergency,” she recalled.
Despite her mother’s visible distress, the receptionist responded with no empathy, demanding over ₹800 for offering them the facility. They were billed for an entire room.
The photo of the bill showed tax inclusion too. The actual charge of the room, which they were given to avail washroom facility for a few minutes, was Rs. 714. A tax of Rs. 85 was added to the bill, increasing the restroom charge to Rs. 815.
Despite the family’s desperate situation, they had no choice but to pay the high fee. “My mother couldn’t even stand by that point. We had no option. We paid", she wrote.
This incident has shaken the internet and made them question whether humanity is lost.
