The PM Modi-led Centre welcomed on Friday the United States' decision to designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) acknowledged and appreciated the move, noting it as a step that aligns with global efforts to combat terrorism.
"The Government of India welcomes the decision of the United States Department of State to designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). We acknowledge and appreciate the leadership of Secretary of State Mr. Marco Rubio in this regard," the statement read.
"India remains committed to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and will continue to work closely with its international partners to ensure that terrorist organizations and their proxies are held accountable," it added.
The US action follows the LeT proxy group's involvement in the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir that left 26 civilians dead—the deadliest attack on Indian soil since the 2008 Mumbai carnage. The terror group had initially taken responsibility for the attack and then redacted its statement on the matter.
Rubio, in a statement announcing the designation, had said earlier that the decision reflects the Trump administration’s “commitment to justice” and to safeguarding US national security interests.
“TRF and its associated aliases have been added to LeT's designation as a FTO and SDGT pursuant to Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224,” the Secretary of State had said.
Later the April 22 attack and Operation Sindoor, the Central government dispatched seven multi-party delegations to 33 global capitals, including Washington, to ramp up international pressure on Pakistan and draw global attention to its sustained support for cross-border terrorism.
