A 42-year-old civil engineer from Suddaguntepalya in south Bengaluru died in his sleep after a fight with his wife, who later told the police she had hit him in self-defence during an abusive argument.
According to a report by The Times of India, the incident took place on the night of June 27 in Bhavani Nagar, where the man, Bhaskar, had come to collect his SUV. He had been living away from his family for two months, reportedly staying with a domestic help he was having an affair with.
Police said Bhaskar was heavily drunk when he reached home around midnight. His wife, 33-year-old Shruthi, tried to stop him from driving in that state and asked him to leave in the morning. But the conversation turned violent, and Bhaskar allegedly started hitting her and tried to force her and their daughters out of the house.
Shruthi told police she struck him with a wooden stick, usually used to prepare ragi mudde, in an act of self-defence. Later, she helped him clean up and lie down to sleep. But the next morning, when their daughters tried to wake him up, he didn’t respond.
Shruthi initially claimed that Bhaskar had slipped and fallen in the bathroom the previous night. However, police weren’t convinced and sent the body for a post-mortem. The report found that Bhaskar had suffered blunt-force trauma to his ribs, leading to internal injuries and death from shock.
Under questioning, Shruthi admitted to hitting Bhaskar but said she didn’t mean to kill him. She said she was reacting after years of emotional neglect and domestic abuse.
Bhaskar had no siblings and both his parents were deceased. Shruthi was his second wife, he had divorced his first wife after just two months. The couple earned a monthly income of around Rs 1.5 lakh from rent, but Shruthi told police that she was only given Rs 5,000 a month to manage the household. She also claimed Bhaskar spent most of his time drinking and on his affair.
Shruthi has now been arrested and sent to judicial custody on murder charges. Police say her claims of self-defence and long-term domestic conflict are part of their ongoing investigation.
The couple’s two daughters are currently staying with their maternal grandmother. Authorities have suggested that the rental income from Bhaskar’s property be used for the children’s care and education.
