NTA JEE Main 2025 Exam Pattern Changed: Major revision you must keep in mind for next year

Send Push
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced changes to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) for 2025, ending the optional question format introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting with JEE Main 2025, all numerical questions in Section B must be answered, unlike the previous format where students could choose which questions to attempt. This change marks a return to the pre-pandemic exam structure.
NTA JEE Main 2025: Discontinuation of optional numerical questions
Since 2021, students appearing for JEE Main had the flexibility to attempt any 5 out of 10 numerical questions in Section B of each subject. This flexibility was introduced as a relief measure during the pandemic, accommodating students facing challenges due to disruptions in education. However, the NTA confirmed that this option will no longer be available from 2025. Instead, Section B will now consist of 5 mandatory numerical questions per subject.
JEE Main 2025 application process
The NTA also announced that the application process for the first phase of JEE Main 2025 will start soon. Specific details regarding the registration process and further information about the examination pattern will be released on the NTA’s official website.
JEE Main 2025 Exam structure and marking scheme
JEE Main, the national entrance test for engineering, continues to have three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam consists of a total of 90 questions, with 30 questions from each subject. Section A contains 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) per subject, while Section B includes 10 numerical questions. Under the revised pattern, all 5 numerical questions in Section B will be compulsory.

Each correct answer in the exam will be awarded 4 marks, while 1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. The total score for JEE Main will remain at 300 marks.
Students urged to stay updated
Students and candidates planning to take JEE Main 2025 are advised to frequently check the NTA’s official website for the latest updates on the registration process and any changes in the exam pattern.

The new pattern is expected to align the exam with pre-pandemic standards, focusing on testing students’ full understanding of numerical concepts.
