Jose Mourinho fumes at VAR in astonishing rant after controversial Fenerbahce game

Send Push

unleashed a fiery tirade against VAR after Fenerbahce's contentious encounter with Trabzonspor. Sofyan Amrabat rocketed Fenerbahce to a last-gasp win deep into added time - turning up the heat in the Super Lig title race.

Fred nudged Fenerbahce ahead just before half-time. The second half saw Trabzonspor - controversially - secure two penalties in swift succession, both of which Simon Banza buried to grab the lead.

Edin Dzeko, who was brought on for Sebastian Szymanski, bagged the equaliser with 15 minutes remaining. Then, some 12 minutes beyond the 90, Amrabat found the top corner to dramatically grab all three points.

As his shot found the back of the net, chaos ensued at Papara Park. Mourinho, who hilariously botched a knee slide, was swamped by his squad and staff in celebration. Even as Fenerbahce marched off with the win, Mourinho fumed over the officiating, branding the referee 'invisible' and a 'little boy'.

He even, astonishingly, stated he would have bypassed managing in Turkey had he known the whole truth' about the referees there. During his post-match exchange with beIN SPORTS, Mourinho didn't hold back.

The former and manager said: "Today, the man of the match was [VAR referee] Atilla Karaoglan. We didn't see him, but he was the referee of the match. The referee was just a little boy who was there on the pitch, but the referee was Atilla Karaoglan."

"He went from an invisible man to the most important man of the match. I speak on behalf of all Fenerbahce fans; we don't want him again. We don't want him because it smells bad. We don't want him. We don't want him on the pitch, but on the VAR even less."

Mourinho continued: "I know what I was told, even before I came. I didn't believe.

"It's even worse than I was told. But I prefer to be on this side. It's more difficult. It's more difficult because we play against good opponents like Trabzonspor is; good opponent with lots of good players and a historical coach.

"But we play against a system. And to play against a system is the most difficult thing. We played against a good team, against a strong atmosphere, against VAR - and against the system. So very hard. That's why we celebrated this victory so much.

"It's unbelievable to win this match against so many powerful people. We're not going to give up. We know what we have. I blame the Fenerbahce people that brought me here! They told me only half of the truth.

"They didn't tell me the whole truth, because if they told me the whole truth I wouldn't come! But with half of the truth, with my boys we fight the opponent, we fight the system."

After the interview, Mourinho took to , where he claimed his side were denied a clear penalty. The Portuguese tactician shared footage of an alleged handball incident involving a Trabzonspor player that went unpunished.

"Watch and smile. If you like it watch the game because the funny situations don't stop with this clip," wrote the iconic ex-Chelsea manager. The post has already totted-up over half-a-million likes and almost 20,000 comments, with Manchester United star Diogo Dalot among those to have engaged with it.
