Eltham Crash victim was 'week away from giving birth' as husband 'ran to wreck'

A woman who was killed in a after she was struck by an unmarked car was set to give birth in the coming weeks, according to locals.

The expectant mum tragically died alongside her unborn child on the A20 in Eltham, south east , at around 6.15pm on Thursday. The victim has only been identified by her age at this time. Residents situated on the busy road said the 38-year-old was accompanied by her other child in the .

One woman, who lives across opposite the road, said: “I can’t believe she’s dead. She had her young daughter with her in the car. She can only be about four. Her husband came running over. She was heavily pregnant, probably only a week or so from giving birth.”

The woman said she didn’t want to say any thing else, adding: “It’s traumatic to think about.” Another resident said: “I saw the fire brigade cutting open two of the cars - an unmarked police Volvo and another car. The woman’s vehicle rolled over three times. I saw the fire brigade cutting the roofs off both cars in order to get people out. There seemed to be three cars involved, but I don’t think they cut the roof off that one. It’s so sad.”

The Metropolitan Police said an unmarked vehicle collided with a car near the junction with Kidbrooke Park Road. Two officers in the unmarked car were taken to hospital but have since been discharged. Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, in charge of policing in Greenwich, paid tribute to the victim's family. He said: "My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends who have lost their loved ones in these tragic circumstances.

"An investigation into the circumstances of this collision is under way by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and we will assist with their enquiries in any way we can. A road closure will remain at the scene today and I am grateful for the patience of the local motorists, who will need to use alternative routes."

Beautiful floral tributes were placed at the crash site close to the Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre. A note on one bouquet said: “My deepest thoughts are with you and your baby, your family + friends. The most awful tragedy that should never of happened and I hope your family get some justice. RIP beautiful lady + your baby."
