The current has broken his silence to speak about the fevered speculation about his missing dad - 50 years since the family nanny was murdered.
George Lucan has rarely discussed his dad who disappeared off the face of the Earth after the crime that shocked the . But with the current special three-part documentary series - in which nanny Sandra Rivett’s son Neil Berriman claims to have found him alive in - George decided to talk about the case.
He told “The Oldie” magazine that he will never know what really happened that night on 7th November 1974 in which Sandra was bludgeoned to death. He said: “Whether my father had some hand in the carnage that night or himself became a victim of it, I will never know and I doubt anyone else will either."
Looking fondly at a family photo of his dad, he described his personal recollections. He said: “On my own memories he was a kind, gentle and loving father, such as is pictured here. Picturing him as such in relaxed surroundings – such images rarely see the light of day, whilst those of him in starched shirts, three-breasted suits and formal wear are too numerous to speak of.”
He resents the stories of how his dad escaped with “any absurd narrative set in the backstreets of Bangkok or Adelaide or Rio with carefree abandon.” An inquest jury named his father as the murderer of Sandra Rivett. Lucan was officially declared dead in by a court back in 2016 under the Presumption of Death Act, which came into effect in 2014.
At the time George said: "I am very happy with the judgment of the court in this matter." But this latest BBC series, which concludes tonight, casts doubt on that legal decision. It follows the 17 year long quest by Berriman, a Hampshire building contractor, to find Lucan.
He insists he is living as a Buddhist monk in Australia. When the mystery English pensioner is tracked down he denies being Lucan. He said: “If I am what the f**k you going to do? Put me in prison? I’m not a f***ing buddhist - I’m not anything.”
