With Venice suffering from the impact of overtourism, it’s understandable to look for alternatives where you don't have to fight through throngs of people to view the beautiful scenery.
The floating city has become popular to the point where a tourism tax has been introduced. Luckily, there is a hidden gem of a city which offers the beauty of Venice without the crowds, and for less of a hefty price tag.
Annecy in the south of France is another city built on a network of canals. But it also has a stunning backdrop of the French Alps and beautiful architecture to marvel at.

You can wander through its historic old town and along the crystal-clear lake without fighting through tourist crowds. Beyond the canals, there are charming weekly markets where local artisans showcase traditional crafts and delicacies.
Being so close to the water, Fresh fish from the lake, such as fera and arctic char are delicacies of the region, as are herbs from the Aravis Mountains. There are also exquisite cheeses like Reblochon and Tome des Bauges, valley-grown local fruits and vegetables, as well as wine.
People who have visited the city are blown away by its beauty, especially that of the lake.

“And enhanced by the gorgeous sun filled day. Strolling along Le Thiou took us to the marvellous Lake, passing the wonderful historic buildings that line both sides. It being Saturday, a holiday atmosphere was in full flow, all relaxing and enjoying the grand surroundings and attractions.”
“Sparkling clear waters were a joy to behold in this world where so much is polluted by us humans,” said another.
“The Lake is actively used by boaters, swimmers, sightseeing and water sports. The water was incredibly clear. As a visitor it was a pleasure to just observe the activities, look at the mountains and enjoy the old town of Annecy. Lake Annecy is magnificent!”
If you fancy a trip to this charming region, then flights from easyJet, British Airways and Swiss Airlines go from the UK to Geneva every day. From there, it's an hour by car or just under an hour by train to Annecy.
You can also take the train from London St Pancras through to Annecy which takes around eight hours.
